In 2002, the national average farm income per worker declined by 2.1 %. However, it progressed in more than half of those departments specializing essentially in cattle and general cropping. Revenue declined in vine growing and pigs and poultry breeding.
Public aid to the farming industry rose to 11.4 billion euros in 2001 or 11 600 euros per worker. The highest amounts went to departments that specialize in general cropping. However, this is changing in favour of cattle breeding.
Administrators of official labels of quality and origin adopt diverse strategies. The promotion of the AOC (Appellation of Certified Origin) and other seals bring out the qualities that stem from tradition and the geographical origin. The CCP (Certification of Product Conformity) emphasizes health safety.
Orchard acreage diminished by 8% between 1997 and 2002. Apple orchards remain the largest, covering 53 000 hectares. Walnut orchards are now the fourth largest in terms of acreage. Irrigation is the rule in the big orchards.
In 2001, about 3 800 shellfish farms put 109 000 tons of oysters and 73 200 tons of mussels on the market. Shellfish farmers operate along 20 000 hectares of continental shore.
In 2001, current pre-tax income of the FADN farms is down by 6.1% in real terms. It had declined by 9.8% in 2000. Subsidies increase by 7.2%.
Nearly 11 000 holdings cultivate 21 000 hectares of flowers, ornamental and nursery plants. Except for the cut flower, horticultural areas are on the increase. Nursery areas remain stable.
In 2001, farming brought 19 % too much nitrate to the ground. This excess comes from mineral fertilizer in the Paris region and the livestock wastes in Brittany.
About 40 % of the food industry made innovations in products or in methods of production from 1998 to 2000. Innovation comes particularly from the largest firms and those in direct contact with consumers.
From 1999 to 2001, dairy production of cheese made with milk straight from the cow rose by 1,1 %. However, production of uncooked cow milk cheese did not increase and production of soft cheese declined.
